Mountain gorilla, by Liz Williamson. Great Ape Action Fund
Application Guidelines and Procedures

In support of the Section on Great Apes (SGA) of the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group, the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science (CABS) based at Conservation International (CI) administers a fund to provide urgently-needed support for the conservation and protection of great apes in emergency situations. All applications should be sent to the Coordinator of the Great Ape Action Fund, who will manage the review process. Both SGA and non-SGA members are permitted to apply for funds. The fund will provide small grants (up to $5,000) in the hope that this will aid applicants to leverage further funding. Since the fund aims to respond to emergency situations, the fund will try to review the grants quickly (within two weeks of the receipt of the application).

Support for this fund has been generously provided by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), which is a joint initiative of Conservation International, the Global Environment Facility, the Government of Japan, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the World Bank. A fundamental goal of the CEPF is to ensure civil society is engaged in biodiversity conservation. Additional support has also been provided by The Great Ape Trust of Iowa.

It is hoped that this fund will be catalytic in stimulating further donations. As such, it could provide the means for the establishment of a permanent resource for supporting field conservation and research, monitoring programs for threats and population status and, most importantly, pressing conservation measures and the resolution of short-term threats to ape survival.
