The taxonomic position of Bouvier’s red colobus is not yet settled. It is at least a subspecies, but it is not certain what species it should be placed in. Like Miss Waldron’s red colobus, this monkey is suspected by some to be extinct. The London Natural History Museum has specimens collected in 1926 and 1927 from Butando and Nola, Congo; in the American Museum of Natural History there is a specimen labeled as coming from Ouesso; Malbrant and Maclatchy (1949) reported that it occurred in the forested regions of the Sangha, Likouala and Alima; and in the region of N’Gabe; N’Gabe is near the Lefini Reserve, where in the 1970s F. Petter and F. Vincent reported to P. Dandelot that they had seen the monkeys at Inoni near Boemba. There have been no reports of any sightings in the last 20 years. Recent surveys by Ahab Downer and Ruffin Oko found veteran hunters in the Lefini who claimed that the monkey did exist there but that none had been seen in perhaps five years. Outside the reserve, hunters around M’be and Okiene recognized photos and drawings. A really serious survey for this monkey in the Likouala Mossaka/Sangha/Likouala aux Herbes region is a high priority.
