The Central Yunnan black-crested gibbon is endemic to China and is believed to occur only in the Wuliangshan District in Jingdong County, situated between the Mekong and Black Rivers. Males are entirely black. The body hair of females is golden yellow, their appendages are black-brown, and the face and throat areas gray-white. At present, the only protected area in which this subspecies is known to occur is the Wu Liang Shan Nature Reserve, and the most reliable estimates of its remaining population are in the low hundreds.
