West Yunnan Black-Crested Gibbon
Nomascus concolor furvogaster Ma and Wang, 1986
CR A2cd, B2a

This subspecies of black crested gibbon is found in China’s Yunnan Province, west of the Mekong River, which represents the westernmost occurrence of Nomascus concolor. Male West Yunnan black crested gibbons have short black body hair, while that of the females is long and gray-yellow to yellow-brown in color on the back, and completely black on the chest, abdominal and armpit areas. According to the China Red Data Book of Endangered Animals, the distribution of Nomascus concolor furvogaster includes the counties of Cangyuan, Gengma, Shuangjiang, Yongde, Lincang, Baoshan and Yunlong. However, gibbons appear to have been extirpated throughout much of western Yunnan Province and some primatologists believe that the only viable populations remaining are those found in Cangyuan County. The only population estimates available put the number of west Yunnan black crested gibbons at less than 100 animals. Although its presence in officially protected areas is questionable, it may occur in Daxueshan and Nangunhe Nature Reserves.
