As its name implies, this macaque is found on the Indonesian island of Siberut, the largest and northernmost of the Mentawai Islands. As of 1995, nearly one-half of Siberut’s 1,926 square kilometers has been designated as a new protected area, Siberut National Park, and some tens of thousands of primates are believed to still inhabit the island’s forests. In addition, logging activities have been suspended, leaving land conversion and hunting as the principal threat to this macaque and other resident primates.
