As mentioned above, the taxonomic status of the central Javan gibbon is debated among primatologists, and the species, Hylobates moloch, may in fact be monotypic. If H. m. pongoalsoni is indeed a valid taxon, however, it is not known to occur in any protected areas, and there are no valid estimates of its population.
