Yunnan Lar Gibbon
Hylobates lar yunnanensis Ma and Wang, 1986
CR C2a, D

The Yunnan lar gibbon, which is found only in southwest Yunnan Province, China, is the only one of five lar gibbon subspecies that is currently considered threatened, yet it may be among the world’s most critically endangered primates. Less than 100 individuals are believed to survive in the Nangunhe Nature Reserve. Habitat loss is the main threat to its existence, much of the region’s former forests having been cut and the land converted to agriculture. Hunting also remains a threat, and a potentially severe one given the small number of individuals believed to remain. It is unclear whether populations still survive other than that in the Nangunhe Nature Reserve.
