The taxonomic position of this monkey is unresolved. It is believed to occur only in Liberia and western Côre d’Ivoire, but the greater spot-nosed guenons of Nigeria west of the Cross River (considered by some to represent C. n. insolitus), may also be included within this subspecies. Greater spot-nosed guenons throughout this region are in critical condition because of their very patchy distribution in an area of heavy hunting pressure. Cercopithecus nictitans stampflii should be a high research priority both for its taxonomy and population status. Its presence within any protected area is not confirmed.
