The northern brown howling monkey (until recently known as Alouatta fusca fusca) is endemic to the Atlantic forests of eastern Brazil. It once occurred throughout a large part of the state of Bahia and extreme northern Minas Gerais, but it is today restricted to a very few isolated forests in southern Bahia and northeastern Minas Gerais. Apparently, in most areas south of the Rio Jequitinhonha it is replaced by the southern brown howling monkey (A. g. clamitans). At the present time, the northern brown howling monkey is not known to occur in any protected areas.
