The black-handed howling monkey is known historically from only four localities in northeastern Brazilian Amazonia along coastal Maranhão. Today, it is not known whether any populations still survive in a region that has a long history of human occupation. The validity of this subspecies, in fact, remains questionable, being based on its pelage coloration, which recent studies have found to be highly variable in Alouatta belzebul.
